Lihue is the county seat of the island of Kauai. All State, Federal and County government departments are located here. With a population of 15586 residents according to the 2010 US census. The median household income for the district is just north of $69,000.

In ancient Pre history times Lihue was nothing more than a small village. In the Hawaiian language its name means “cold chill”. With the early beginnings of the sugar industry in the 1800’s the town became a major hub with its proximity to Nawiliwili harbor and major sugar mills.
Into the 1900’s Lihue attracted commerce and agricultural entrepreneurs who found easy shipping routes to the main island of Oahu and to the sugar refineries on the west coast of California.
Today the Lihue is the home to a modern airport and the Kauai Community College which is part of the University of Hawaii educational system.
